Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) is a UK-wide programme that aims to help businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills.

KTP is part-funded by the Government and involves the forming of a partnership between your company (the ‘company partner’), a recent graduate (the 'associate’), and a university (the ‘knowledge-base partner’). The associate works full time in your company to manage strategic projects and facilitates the transfer of skills and expertise, transferring the knowledge the company is seeking into the business via a strategic project. Project duration can vary from 10 weeks to three years, depending on the needs of the business and the desired outcomes.

We work with companies to identify an academic or researcher with the right knowledge and skills to assist their organisation. A project is then defined and agreed which will enable the company to draw on that expertise. They are supported by a team of experts – professors, senior lecturers and researchers - who bring technical expertise, research and innovation to the company.

What are the benefits?

The latest KTP Annual Report 2008/09 shows that the business benefits from a single KTP project are:

  • one-off increase in profit before tax of £81,288 (highest £3 million)
  • an increase of more than £270,000 in annual profits before tax
  • creation of three genuine new jobs in addition to that of the associate
  • an additional 14 existing staff trained
  • 81% of partners have plans for further collaboration.
