Entry level
For all IMS courses, the normal academic entry requirement is a minimum of a lower second (2.2) Honours degree (or equivalent) in any one of the following:

Please note that this list is not exclusive.
Alternatively, a Higher National Diploma (Merit or Distinction award) or ordinary degree in a maritime-related subject combined with an appropriate track record of achievement in a professional context such as at a senior managerial level may be sufficient.
In the case of professional mariners, the entry requirements are as follows:

Deck Officer: Master's (Unlimited) Certificate + at least two years' experience as Chief Officer

Ship Engineer: Chief Engineer (Class 1) Certificate + at least two years' as Chief Engineer.

For professional applicants, proof of prior learning and relevant work experience is necessary.

Course content
International Maritime Law
This unit provides the opportunity for you to critically evaluate the development, aims and applications of international maritime law, including offshore energy law. Special attention is given to problem solving through the use of a negotiating exercise. The unit investigates the allocation of rights and duties concerning the exploitation of natural resources in the marine environment, and international and European regulation of shipping and the marine environment.
Management of Shipping Operations
This unit provides you with an understanding of the total management issues required in managing a shipping operation both on-board ship and ashore. The inter-relationship of different management functions throughout the shipping operation, and how ship and shore are linked is studied to promote an understanding of how this will enhance the commercial, safety and environmental protection aims of the maritime venture. These issues are all examined in relation to the requirements of current international maritime legislation.
Maritime Environmental Management
This unit explores the concept of marine and coastal environmental quality and identifies the key environmental issues and impacts associated with shipping and ports. The need for an integrated and holistic approach to environmental management is developed and the techniques and approaches available to the management of maritime industry are reviewed and analysed. These approaches include both resource-use specific tools aimed at discharge and pollution control and maritime spatial planning as a means of applying geographical jurisdiction.
Safety and Enforcement
This unit provides students with an appreciation of the issues and the role/influence of key organisations and “players” associated with health, safety and maritime law enforcement within both the shipping and offshore industries. It also explores ways of addressing these issues and examines the relationship between safety and enforcement.
Project Proposal
This unit develops the research and academic study skills relevant to being successful at Masters Level in Higher Education. More specifically it introduces students to the research process and details the theoretical underpinning philosophies of research along with the methodological options for both data gathering and data analysis. The intent of the unit is to enable students to produce a realistic and achievable research proposal that they can then implement in order to produce a Masters Level project
Project
Maritime professionals need to develop and demonstrate competence in identifying, investigating and analysing problems associated with their existing, or potential, areas of responsibility. They need to be able to communicate the findings effectively and to influence others, as well as lead changes in policy or practices. This unit develops these skills, from identifying an area for research, through planning and implementing a programme of research, to analysing, evaluating, interpreting and communicating the findings. These skills are applied to an area relevant to the programme of study and in an area of personal interest to the student. The unit also provides the opportunity to carry out research and further development in an area relevant to a student’s future career.
Assessment
Each taught unit is assessed by a combination of presentations, written coursework and/or an examination. The exact combination of assessments, and their timing, depends on the subject nature of each unit.

With the advantage of Southampton's superb geographic location, you'd have access to a wide range of study environments. The nearby Warsash Maritime Academy can be used for practical field and boat work.
A recent addition is the 'Solent Surveyor', a new 10 metre catamaran Evolution 995, equipped to carry out inshore navigational training, hydrographic and environmental research.
On campus there are more practical testing facilities including a purpose-designed and equipped CAD design office, hosting virtually all of the currently available software used in the industry, plus maritime systems laboratories. These accommodate state-of-the-art computer systems for the management of coastal resources and treatment of coastal data.
Southampton Solent University also benefits from a 60-metre industry standard towing tank used for laboratory sessions and final year project work, as well as a 4-metre stability tank. We have built new fabrication shops for advanced composite construction, which will provide you with access to hi-tech materials and processes commonly used in the marine industry.

Field trips
Southampton is a major centre within the UK and European shipping sector and this course takes advantage of such a position with visits to the Port of Southampton and other local organisations.
The international environmental designations adjacent to Southampton also provide an excellent context to study the interaction between shipping and the environment.
