Course overview
The PGC Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at Southampton Solent University aims to support you as you develop as a lecturer so that you both provide a high quality learning experience for your student and critically engage with the scholarship of learning and teaching. The course is deliberately flexible, using a work based learning approach designed to respond to the individual circumstances and interests of each course member and the area of the curriculum in which they engage.
The course provides a collegial experience within a reflective practitioner model, encouraging you to explore your continuing professional development through your own managed learning with the ongoing, friendly support of peers and tutors.

Course content
The course consists of three units requiring attendance on Wednesday afternoons from October through to May with a final submission of coursework at the end of August.
Building the Student Learning Experience (30 credit points)
The unit, which runs in period one, considers the student learning experience and the factors that contribute to its success. It moves from a consideration of the situation of the learner in Higher Education to the role of the tutor in supporting the learning experience both face to face and online. Different approaches will be discussed and analysed to make explicit the tacit theories of learning and support of learners that are in use. Participants will be encouraged as reflective practitioners to consider how from an initial design they build the learning experience through class/online activity and formative feedback towards an assessment event.
CPD and Employability (15 Credit points)
This unit, which runs in period 2 will focus on employability and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of the learner/lecturer. The unit will provide an overview of policies and current concepts/issues around notions of employability and graduate skills and attributes. Participants will explore how to develop employability skills within courses, and analyse the key skill characteristics required in a chosen sector/subject area.
Creating an integrated design for learning in the discipline (15 Credit points)
The unit, which also runs in period 2, considers the issues involved in the evaluation of and potential changes to unit/module or course design. The overarching framework of course design involves quality and enhancement issues, it may be influenced by the demands of the subject discipline as well as the role of professional bodies and student employability. The role of the participant and their professional practice, subject knowledge and the learning environment they create will be part of the reflective process underpinning the unit.
Attendance
Wednesday afternoons.
For those teaching in Higher Education on a part time basis a separate Professional Development Unit, Enhancing Learning in Higher Education is offered. This unit is recognised by the HEA at Associate Fellow level and is delivered from November onwards on a blended learning basis through the online learning environment and two or three taught sessions on an evening or weekend morning basis.
