Course Overview

The MProf Professional Development at Southampton Solent University is designed to provide people with a flexible means of study and gives scope to build on personal and organisational development needs. It is intended principally for those who are currently in employment who want to develop themselves further, regardless of their discipline or profession.

The course focuses on generic personal development that is pertinent to anyone engaged in a leadership or management role, rather than the traditional range of business-related disciplines. It therefore emphasises the interdisciplinary nature of work-based situations, thus engaging you in identifying your learning needs and helping you to critically evaluate current practice. You will relate projects to your occupational context and may also undertake project work that builds on a secondment, consultancy or outreach activities in which you engage.

As well as appealing to a broad range of occupations, the course offers an opportunity, via options, for individuals from the further and higher education sector to build on their postgraduate teaching qualification in order to gain a Master's degree.

Course content

All students will be expected to undertake the Learning Contract unit, the Research Methods unit and at least one project/dissertation unit.

Other indicative units are:

  • Challenging Strategic Thinking
  • Transformation in Professional Practice
  • Politics in Organisations
  • Creative Analysis of Practice
  • Leadership
  • Managing Complex Teams
  • Issues in Learning Technology
  • Designing the Online Learning Experience
  • Enhancing Higher Education Through Knowledge Exchange
  • Linking the Organisation Into the Wider Community.

Attendance

The course will be delivered through a mixture of supported online delivery through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and short block attendance which will normally be arranged during weekends. Although most students are expected to undertake the course over two years, there is scope to study units at a different pace, providing that this is agreed with the Course Leader.
