  • CCNA 640 - 801 Certification,
  • Completed and passed units 1-4 of the CCNA Academy Programme,
  • Computer Networking HND or Degree,
  • relevant and extensive industrial experience. 

An interview will be required to assess your industrial experience for point 4 above.

Course overview  

 Do you want to learn how to install, configure and maintain large, multi-protocol networks?

In partnership with Cisco Systems, the Southampton Solent University Cisco Academy delivers a comprehensive learning experience to help students develop ICT skills for career opportunities, continuing education and preparation for globally recognised career certifications.

The expertise you develop when preparing for the CCNP certification will add to your skill set and help you expand your professional options. The CCNP course provides a next step for Cisco CCNA students who want to build on their CCNA level skills.

The CCNP is an advanced course which consists of: installing, configuring and operating local and wide area networks. The focus is on developing those skills that enable students to implement scalable networks, build campus networks, create and deploy global intranets and troubleshoot in a Cisco environment.

This course is 90% practically based and all taught contact time is in a specially designed Cisco network laboratory. 

 Professional accreditation 

This course is awarded by Cisco Systems.

Course content  

The course is of 280 hours duration, split into four Cisco semesters. Each semester is stand-alone, lasting 70 hours. In addition to the 70 hours, you will be expected to contribute 20 hours of private study. The CCNP course is 90% practical.

Topics

CCNP Route: Implementing IP routing

  • Explain complex network requirements and design models for implementing advanced routing services.
  • Implement interior and exterior routing protocols, path control, various mechanisms for controlling routing updates and traffic. 
  • Describe a basic implementation for branch office and teleworker connectivity and IPV6 in an enterprise network.

CCNP Switch: Implementing IP switching

  • Assess the structure and components used to build or expand an enterprise campus network.
  • Implement monitor and maintain VLANs, inter-VLAN routing and spanning tree protocol in an enterprise campus network. 
  • Describe and implement LAN security features. 
  • Prepare and plan for advanced services in a campus infrastructure.

CCNP TSHOOT: Maintaining and Troubleshooting IP networks:

  • Plan and document maintenance functions, develop a troubleshooting strategy, and select tools that support this.
  • Practice maintenance procedures and fault resolution in switched and routing environments.
  • Troubleshoot NAT PAT DHCP network, performance wireless connectivity, VOIP and video traffic. 
  • Practice maintenance procedures and fault resolution in a secure infrastructure.

Assessment  

 The course is assessed through a mixture of online assessments, practical laboratory testing and student performance.  

Special features  

The programme is a comprehensive e-learning programme which provides students with the internet technology skills essential in a global economy. 

Attendance  

Two evenings per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  

Special facilities  

Remote access to real Cisco network equipment is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via Southampton Solent University’s NETLABtm so students can complete practical labs and assessment at their own convenience.
