New York trip

"I absolutely loved it, I really did have an amazing time…I would do it again in a heartbeat." Student Comment

This January students from Writing Fashion and Culture were lucky enough to go to New York.

The 2nd year students, along with Magazine Journalism students and Senior Lecturer Sarah Cooper, explored the cosmopolitan city on foot, visited must see tourist sites and enjoyed exhibitions at world famous museums.

During the four night visit they took a trip to the Empire State Building, went ice skating in Central Park, explored both the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museums and visited the Fashion Institute of Technology.

A spot of sightseeing during a trip on the Staten Island Ferry, which runs between Manhattan and Staten Island, and the Sex and the City tour completed the trip. Students made use of their spare time by exploring the shopper's paradise; shopping in the fashionable department stores and speciality shops on Fifth Avenue and browsing the one-of- a kind boutiques and big name stores in Soho.

One student commented: "Having things planned each day to do helped people confidently get their bearings  around a city they have never visited so when we had time to do what we wanted we felt better about it. Doing all the touristy things is a must too."

As well as enjoying the sights the students gained an educational insight into fashion styling and the world of magazine publishing. Sought –after fashion stylist Rebecca Weinberg, who has styled numerous celebs including Sarah Jessica Parker and Mia Farrow, spoke to the students about editorial styling, the fashion industry and work experience opportunities.

Students found a visit to the publishing house of New York- based 'Paper' magazine invaluable with Paper encouraging applications for internships.

A trip to Tokoyo is organised for January 2009 with the hope that students will be able to explore the Kyoto costume collection, visit an independent publishing house and enjoy a talk from a foreign correspondent.
