News release - clearing 2008

Southampton Solent University congratulates all further education students who have passed their exams this week. And the University is making sure as many as possible have the opportunity to benefit from higher education.
For those who have narrowly missed out on their predicted grades, have higher than expected results, or who have decided late to enter higher education, the University's Clearing hotline is taking calls.
Although rises in applications to Southampton Solent University are among the highest in the UK (6% up on last year), Clearing is still an important process. Recruitment Manager, Jo-Ann Stockwell said: "Clearing is vital for a range of people. There are many who apply after unexpected A level results. But others apply late because they have had a change of mind about their degree courses; they may have taken a gap year; or are deciding on a career change. We're also offering people the chance to enter higher education through Foundation degrees or HNDs."
Solent graduate, Wendy Lowth, from Hedge End, has an optimistic message for anyone who achieved lower than predicted A level results. Despite her initial disappointment, Wendy graduated with a 2:1 and went straight on to a Master's degree before being offered her dream job as a case worker for Southampton's Crown Prosecution Service.
She said: "I didn't get into the university I expected. I thought that places would go quickly through Clearing, and I was frantically making phone calls. A hotline operator at Southampton Solent University took my details, made an assessment and offered me a place."
For more details about places still available on a range of courses, call Southampton Solent University's Clearing Hotline - from now until mid September - on
