News release - Dental design
A Southampton Solent University students' interactive dental toolkit may be just the thing to encourage dental patients to keep their appointments.
Third-year Graphic Design student, Matt Green has just won the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Competition with a dental pack designed to encourage patients to keep their appointment and calm their nerves in the waiting room.
Matt said:
"The tool kit is small enough to be carried to the dentist surgery. It includes information on dental hygiene, and humour to help lighten the mood of an anxious patient waiting for a daunting appointment".
It has interactive flaps and pockets containing a variety of items including a pull out card which works like an x-ray revealing the patients next appointment when held up to the light, and the dentist's business card.
Matt had to present his work to a panel of seven judges from the Graphic Design industries at the RSA's Head Quarters in London, after being shortlisted from over 400 entrants.
Matt said:
"As well as the presentation I had to show the judges other projects completed on my degree course. They seemed impressed with the standard of my work and gave me some great advice for my future career."
The prize includes £3600 and a two month work placement at Glaxo Smith Kline consumer health care where he will gain valuable experience working alongside Glaxo's European Packaging Design Manager.
Paul Shakespeare said:
"We are really proud of Matt. Our BA Graphic Design course has an enviable reputation for winning major awards at national design competitions, of which the RSA is the most prestigious."
