Fine Art degree show

17 June 2008

BA (Hons) Fine Art student Tom Maccoy caught the eye of several interested parties already considering commissioning his unique wire sculptures – which represent his thoughts and feelings through a unique kaleidoscopic.

From a distance the sculptures looked like clay heads with twisted wires coming out, but on closer inspection the heads reveal a view finder which, when looked through.

Tom said: "I wanted to show how things that look chaotic to the outside world are crystal clear through the eyes of the individual.

"I have been greatly influenced by Auguste Rodin, who used bronze sculptures to interpret philosophical thought, but it was my summer job as a gardener which opened my eyes to the usefulness of wire as a medium for my work."

Simon Heron, Creative Director of Southampton's 3 Men & a Surfboard was so impressed with Tom's work he is considering commissioning a piece for his office. He said: "Not only are Tom's sculptures aesthetically pleasing but looking through the view finder evokes a child-like fascination."

Tom credits Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts, Jon Buck and Gregg Palmer, Associate lecturer in Fine Arts for helping him develop his skill.

Tom added: "I'm overwhelmed by the response my work has received and would ultimately like to find a workshop in which to develop my welding skills and produce more sculptures.

The degree shows are open to the public until Friday June 19. For further information contact the Press Office on 023 8031 9040 or email press.office@solent.ac.uk||.
