Henry Allingham

Henry AllinghamIt is with deep sadness that Southampton Solent University has learned of Henry Allingham’s death. The University had the pleasure of presenting Henry Allingham with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering at Warsash Maritime Academy on Friday, 22 May, just two weeks before his 113th birthday.

Henry was awarded the doctorate by Chancellor, Lord Alan West, for his contribution to Britain and its allies during two world wars and his charity work - especially with veterans.

Henry – a founder member of the Royal Air Force – had said he felt woefully under qualified during his career as he had no formal engineering qualifications, but was thrilled to be awarded an honorary doctorate.

Although he famously lived to be the oldest man in the world, he continued to be a particular inspiration to young people and during his graduation ceremony at Warsash, he made a special point of talking to young cadets.

Southampton Solent University offers its sincere condolences to family and friends of Henry, whose wonderful spirit, impish humour and great courage touched so many.
