More than 2,200 Southampton Solent University students are celebrating this week after going online to discover their hard work has led to degree success.

Students who had been sweating it out all week were able to log on and find out their results from midnight on Wednesday, 16 July.

For the second year running those with the most firsts were students on the BA (Hons) Computer and Video Games course - with six out of 12 of its committed and creative cohorts clinching a First Class honours degree – and many already employed in the sector.

Course leader Adam Barton said: “Yet again the students did incredibly well. Their success is due to hard graft and motivation to get jobs in the sector. With past students performing so well in the industry, they have really good role models in an increasingly competitive environment.”

Adam Curtis, who graduated last year with a First Class Honours in Computer and Video Games, advised graduates to apply as early as possible for jobs in a bid to beat the rush.

On graduating, he started work with Kuju and now works with London-based Digi-Guys as a character artist. He has helped produce The house of the dead: Overkill and Dancing with the stars: We dance.

Martyn Taylor graduated in 2007 and now works for Disney-owned Black Rock, where he has worked on games Pure and Split/Second. He said: “Black Rock is a fantastic company focusing solely on racing games. Disney gives us great backing and backbone to work on top quality products.”

He said students needed to work voraciously on their final-year projects and continue to work extremely hard once in the job. “It is no doubt the best job in the world and will be well worth it,” he said.

Other areas that scored highly for firsts were Watersports Studies and Management, Accountancy, and Graphic Design.

Among the students celebrating degree success was Katie Miller, who finished her finals just days before setting off solo across the Atlantic as the youngest woman competitor of the Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. Katie achieved a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in Yacht Production and Surveying. She said: “It’s a double celebration for me. It feels odd not to be working on finals or planning OSTAR. I’m now looking for employment within the yachting sector that will allow me to continue my yachting challenges.”
