Degree Shows 2010 – flying the nest

20 June 2010

Amanda Lock BA (Hons) Fine ArtSolent University’s final-year students have put their talent on display in a series of stunning showcases, Parents and employers have been joining the public to enjoy ‘Flying the Nest’ – a show ranging from flamboyant fashion to fine art, product design to photography.

As well as using the East Park Terrace campus, students have gone ‘off-site’ this year, with illustration final pieces at the city’s Bargate shopping centre.

Work from the Business Information Technology, Computing, Computer Networking, Engineering and Entertainment Technology programmes was showcased on Friday, 11 June where a range of problems was tackled through technology. Students’ solutions included a postoperative prosthetic knee exerciser, fishing gear for disabled anglers and safe-level acoustics at Southampton Guildhall.

the Degree ShowColin Furnell (BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering) designed a solar powered pond alarm to signal help if a child fell in. The part-time student, who completed his degree while working for an engineering company, has a toddler of his own and nearly drowned as a child after falling into a pond.

There was an eclectic and sometimes eccentric collection of work, especially from the Fine Art students who added a well received dash of decadence to proceedings

Nick Morris Spokesmen of DerekIn ‘The Spokesmen of Derek’, Nick Morris (pictured right) used a mixture of wire, canvas, acrylic, latex and gloss to create a group of unsettling, but humorous figures. “The pieces became more distorted as project progressed and took on a life of their own,” said Nick.

Amanda Lock (BA (Hons) Fine Art) (pictured top) experimented with light for her piece. In 'Optical Devices' she created telescopes to evoke childhood memories. Amanda was inspired by work experience at a primary school and is pursuing a career as an art teacher.

Eddie Grover (BA (Hons) Fine Art is a self confessed country boy who was inspired by the energy of the city. Eddie, who grew up in the Hampshire village of Burridge, said: “The city is full to bursting with energy and this is what I have represented through graphic design. I find it difficult going back home to the country because the pace of life is much slower. I’m staying in Southampton.”
