Warsash Maritime Academy's newest officers pass out

21 June 2010

WMA logoMore than 100 Navigation, Marine Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets from Southampton Solent University’s Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) celebrated their graduation to fully qualified officers at the summer passing out ceremony in Southampton Guildhall on Saturday, 19 June.

The newly qualified officers will be embarking on their chosen careers in worldwide shipping, working with some of the most prestigious employers in the cruise, cargo, container, oil and gas sectors.

Representatives from Anglo Eastern Group, BP Shipping, Carnival UK, Celtic Pacific (UK) Ltd, Clipper Marine Services Ltd, Clyde Marine Training, Foreland Shipping (Guernsey Ltd), Hapag-Lloyd, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Shell Ship Management, Ship Safe Training Group, and Viking Recruitment will also be attended the ceremony.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore, said: “A Warsash Maritime Academy qualification is not easily gained but is recognised to be the best in the world. My warmest congratulations to our graduating cadets.”

John Millican, Dean of WMA says: “The graduating cadets have every reason to be proud, not only of what they have achieved during the last three years, but also of the importance of the work they have trained to do. It is their expertise, and the expertise of professional mariners like them, that enables the global economy to function, and which safeguards our oceans and coastlines.”

The passing out ceremony rounded off another successful year for the Academy. WMA’s world renowned manned model training facility – based in Marchwood for the last 20 years – will be moving inland to Timsbury, as part of a £1.5 million investment plan to keep it at the cutting edge of maritime training, and a record breaking  300 new cadets have signed up to start their training in September.
