Student Survival Guide

The 2011 ‘Student Survival Guide’ informs students about safety, security, crime and emergency contact details.

The booklet version is delivered directly to all households in the Polygon area by staff, Student Ambassadors, PCSOs, Council staff and volunteers through our Door-Knocking Campaign at the start of the academic year. It is also distributed to our Freshers in an online version. SSG Front cover

The aim of the publication is to advise and support students who are living – many for the first time – in privately rented accommodation in the community. Working closely with Southampton City Council, Solent Students' Union, Hampshire Police and many other agencies the booklet addresses areas of concern raised by residents and students, including waste management and environmental issues, anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance, crime prevention, personal safety and household security.

As a result, students have a greater understanding of the impact they have on their neighbours. There is also a greater understanding of the problems faced by students living in the broader community and residents can empathise with them. Students are now better informed about refuse collection and recycling regimes and feel more supported; they are also more aware of household and personal safety issues.

A PDF version is available below. Students can access an online version of the Student Survival Guide, under the Support Section and Officical Document area on the Portal. External partners and community groups can also request a hard copy or a box of guides for distribution. Please contact the Community Relations Officer, 023 80 319038 and student.link@solent.ac.uk|.
