Debating

The Royal Courts of JusticeEveryone has engaged in debating at some point, from childish squabbles to barroom discussions of philosophical import. Debating societies are merely the arbitrary extension of this, where topics are considered at scheduled times instead of arising naturally out of conversation. This is why the Southampton Solent Debating Society (SSDS) is open to all students regardless of your course of study. The issues we discuss one way or the other affects us all.

Have you ever been in a class where a tutor asks a question and everyone is silent? Are you one of those students that actually know the answer or have an idea but just won’t/can’t/dare speak? With debating you are guaranteed to increase your confidence in all areas of public speaking and sharpen your speaking abilities. Debating also looks great on your CV and indicates that you can argue persuasively over a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from very contentious ethical and political issues, such as reintroducing the death penalty, legalising euthanasia, prostitution or drugs, down to silly things, including whether there really is a Santa Claus!

Students debate in British Parliamentary| style, similar to what you see in the House of Commons. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a David Cameron or Nick Clegg, this is the Society for you! Debating really is for everyone, whether you want to just listen and enjoy, or stand up and speak, SSDS has something to offer. If you want to take debating further, you can compete against other universities, nationally and internationally.
