Alex Riches - BA (Hons) Events Management (Tourism)
Ever since BA (Hons) Events Management (Tourism) student, Alex Riches, landed a work placement at prestigious events and catering business, Inn or Out, she hasn’t looked back. Alex got involved with some of the company’s most high profile events, including the Farnborough Air Show, Brit Awards and Glamour Awards, as well as its work at top London venues such as Kensington Palace, Banqueting House and Camden Round House (pictured). “Working on these events was a great learning experience, but that was only a small part of it,” she said. “Being in the office and helping to plan the events is where I learnt the most. My confidence really improved and I felt ready to return to uni armed with my new knowledge.” The work placement also gave Alex renewed motivation and fresh ideas: “It made me realise that a career in events is definitely what I want.”
Chris Tickell - BA (Hons) Events Management (Sport)
BA (Hons) Events Management (Sport) student, Chris Tickell, secured a work placement with AESTG (Anglo European St Giles) – a nationwide English language school. His role as an activities organiser for an eight-week summer school in Southampton involved planning everything from sports excursion to cinema trips for nearly 300 students. Working to a tight time frame and budget, Chris was able to put into practice much of what he’d learnt at Level 1 of his degree – from risk assessment to account keeping. “The placement has helped me progress with my studies,” said Chris. “It also means I’ve got relevant examples to which I can apply the theory I learn at Levels 2 and 3.” Chris is hoping to continue working for the organisation throughout his degree – and hopefully beyond!
