FCIS Research
Research and advanced scholarship
Staff and research students in the Faculty of the Creative Industries and Society maintain a rich and varied portfolio of advanced scholarship, research and publication.
The annual programme of events includes international and national conferences, symposia and workshops; exhibitions in the programme at the Institute's Millais Gallery and external venues; and lectures by visiting and internal professional practitioners and academics.
Through its Centre for Creative Development, Faculty staff conduct research work with local and regional communities, and businesses, including creative partnerships with external organisations involving students. A significant proportion of undergraduate and MA candidates engage in research projects.
The Faculty's schools
School of Media
Head of School – Paul Marchbank
The School has close links with the creative industries, particularly in areas such as Television, Popular Music, Radio and Film Production. As one of the country's first ITV Centres of Excellence students can acquire enhanced knowledge and skills through an involvement with this project. Similarly our well resourced facilities play a pivotal role in supporting curriculum delivery and student production on a number of our courses. Students also have the opportunity to develop their creative and professional potential through a variety of other outlets. We have a student-run record label called First Degree Records. The Film Society holds regular screenings at Southampton's Harbour Lights cinema and in the University's own 35mm film projection and multi-track sound facility.
School of Art and Design
Head of School – Professor Alan Schechner
The courses in the School of Art and Design are based on a highly regarded history of Art, Design and Media teaching at Southampton Solent University. Historical context and critical theory consistently underpins our teaching, and a distinctive feature of the curriculum is the dynamic mix of theory and practice. Students on our courses benefit through direct engagement with the numerous social and cultural amenities such as Art Galleries and performance venues, located in or near Southampton.
