School of Human Sciences
Head of School - Dr Terence Butler
The study, research and advanced scholarship within the
School of Human Sciences| is concerned with the broad and
specific issues that arise from the main concerns of individuals and their interaction with others in society. The school therefore has a dedicated group of staff, research students and undergraduates inquiring into a wide and fascinating range of subjects and topics in Psychology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Crime Investigation and Analysis, Housing and Public Health, Health Promotion and Social Work.
Staff in the school are interested in human, social and community activities, the processes and effects of different forms of communication on individuals and our social and political institutions. We ask questions
such as:
-
What is it that motivates individuals?
-
What are the causes and consequences of criminal activity?
-
How should our political and social systems be organised to maximise individual freedom
within conditions of security and stability?
-
How does individual health impact on the well-being in society?
-
What are the appropriate responsibilities and relationship between individuals and
society and its institutions?
-
What are the ways in which people and organisations communicate and promote themselves?
-
What is the role of society in the education of individuals and the public into a better understanding of their health and deal with acute public health-related issues such as the rise in obesity?
-
What is the future of social housing in a rapidly changing economic and policy framework?
Our staff are enthusiastic in researching and writing about all these issues and use their experience, professional training and understanding to ensure that their teaching is at the forefront of developments in their fields.
