School of Media

Head of School - Paul Marchbank

The courses within the School of Media are taught by academics and practitioners primarily from the spheres of film, television, popular music, radio, cultural studies,  photography, screenwriting,Paul Marchbankjournalism and performance. All production staff are highly experienced media industry professionals who bring with them real life experience and skills. We currently have an enviable portfolio of successful filmmakers, music producers, TV producers, editors, directors and screenwriters.

From both an educational and a professional standpoint, the experience of our students is greatly enhanced by the School's close links with the creative industries, particularly in areas such as Television, Popular Music, Radio and Film Production. As one of the country's first ITV Centres of Excellence students can acquire enhanced knowledge and skills through an involvement with this project. Similarly our well resourced facilities play a pivotal role in supporting curriculum delivery and student production on a number of our courses. Students also have the opportunity to develop their creative and professional potential through a variety of other outlets. The Film Society holds regular screenings at Southampton's Harbour Lights cinema and in the University's own 35mm film projection and multi-track sound facility.

The School takes very seriously its vocational aims and aspirations. As such, graduate employment rates are excellent. Recent graduates have gone on to work in the BBC, ITV, national and regional newspapers, the film industry, record labels, radio stations and in a wide arena of jobs. Other students have chosen to go in to such fields as management, clerical administration, teaching, further research, and so on.

The Media School is dynamic, exciting and at the forefront of media production and education.
