Technology School
It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Technology School based within the Maritime and Technology Faculty at Southampton Solent University.
The world of technology is changing fast and this is a potentially exciting time to be involved in these areas, with the advent of 3D broadcasting and the ever developing areas of mobile communications, and the ‘New’ Web (Web 2.0).
The School offers a wide spectrum of courses and course titles reflecting these themes, ranging from HND, Foundation Degree (FdSc) and Undergraduate Degree (BSc(Hons)) through to MSc and registration for Doctoral study (PhD) – all available either full-time or through a more flexible scheme.
We also run a Foundation Programme [link to Technology Foundation Year] that provides a one-year access route to all the Technology School undergraduate degrees. This integrated programme offers a one-year course specifically designed to offer an access route into all our technological degrees for those who do not have the qualifications for direct entry to a degree course, or for mature students who are returning to study. Its aim is to develop technological, analytical and study skills with a focus on the chosen follow-on degree specialism.
Many of our courses have professional accreditation from bodies such as: the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Association of Building Engineers (ABE) the Royal Institute of Navel Architects (RINA) and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).
We have a range of modern facilities based on the city centre campus and a well-qualified and experienced group of staff reflecting the diversity of the course portfolio. We are renowned for our student-friendly approach where our staff's prime responsibility is to help you with your studies.
We have modern resources in computing, games technology, audio and television facilities. In support of our maritime related courses we maintain a fieldwork station at the mouth of the River Hamble, linked closely with Warsash Maritime Academy [link to WMA] (another part of the University). We also have our own research vessel, towing tank, architectural studio, a dedicated CAD suite and a range of laboratories. These facilities, combined with use of the local environment for practical work, ensure our courses are vocational and applied. Our experience suggests that students and employers strongly value this mix.
