Biography

Gavin is a Lecturer in sociology of sport and a member of the Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research. He received a First Class Honours degree from Southampton Solent University and a Masters degree from Loughborough University.

Gavin teaches principally in sociology of sport and research methods, and is unit leader for Globalisation and Sport and Sport and Recreation in Society.

Industry experience

Gavin undertook a research project on behalf of the Premier League between 2008 and 2009 to examine the nationality composition of the Premier Academy League, and has worked as part of a performance analysis team at Southampton Football Academy.

Research interests

Gavin’s research interests broadly lie within the areas of sport, physical culture and qualitative practices. Currently, his work is focussed on the experiences of migrant youth footballers in Premier League Academies.

Awards

Gavin was awarded the Ede and Ravenscroft prize for academic excellence in 2008 and the inaugural scholarship awarded by the Premier League for postgraduate study.
