Biography

Mark de Valk is a senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) Film, BA (Hons) Film & Television Studies, and MA Film courses and specialises in guerrilla/indie-filmmaking processes and practices working with digital, HD, and 16mm formats.

Mark is currently reading for his PhD in film (by practice) at the University of Exeter and has an MA in Cultural & Media Studies and a Certificate in Education (CERT-ED) from the University of Plymouth.

Mark has produced, directed, and written productions in documentary, drama, and experimental formats. His work has been shown at international film festivals including Toronto, Vancouver and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival. Outside of film festivals his production work has featured at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, New York's Museum of Modern Art, and his script work has been shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in competition for a Nicholl Fellowship.

Mark's interests include: art-cinema enthusiast, chess, non-fiction social-justice and political books. As well as regularly attending international film festivals, Mark is also the convenor of our annual film festival trip that has in recent years has taken students to Berlin, Rotterdam and Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Work in progress

Through his exploration and interest in the relationship between film theory and film practice, Mark is currently working on co-editing a collection of essays on cinema, politics and violence for a book called Tortured Cinema and he has also been approached by Routledge to write The Film Handbook as part of their Media Practice series. and he has also been approached by Routledge to write as part of their Media Practice series.
