Stephen is Senior Lecturer (Media, Culture & Production) and Production Coordinator at the University and Co-Founder, Centre for Conflict Resolution Journalism (CCRJ) in Belfast City, Northern Ireland. Stephen's relationship with the CCRJ complements his ongoing, full-time teaching commitment at the University, informing and underpinning his research work and scholarly activity. Stephen is also a nationally elected member of the National Executive Committee of UCU - the University and College Lecturer's Union of the UK. Stephen is also a member of The National Union of Journalists--Membership No. GO927934. Stephen is also currently the Police Liaison-Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for his local district in Ealing London and is very involved with his local community.

Stephen recently completed his fully funded documentary "The Jaweed Al Ghussein Story." In November 2009 the film was screened by the world famous Frontline Club| for war journalists: http://frontlineclub.com/events/2009/11/screening---the-jaweed-al-ghussein-story.html|

In July 2009 'The Jaweed Al Ghussein Story', was pre-screened by The Foreign Press Association (FPA) in London to an audience of journalists and dignitaries from around the world:

The FPA, William Morris (Secretary General of the Next Century Foundation), Canon Andrew White (Archbishop of Baghdad and former envoy to the Middle East for the Archbishop of Canterbury) and Crown Prince Shwebomin of Burma introduced the film. The film tells the story of how Jaweed Al Ghussein was falsely accused by Yasser Arafat of embezzling $6 million from The Palestinian National Fund, abducted and held under house arrest in Gaza. Stephen was also commissioned by The Times Higher Education Supplement to write an article on this project. His article "Documenting Injustice" appeared in the THES in October 2007.

Forthcoming: Conference Panel Chair, 'Ethical Issues in Documentary Filmmaking', Cleraun Media Ethics Conference in Dublin October 2010. Desmond will interview panel members including George Carey, Founder of Newsnight on the BBC, Series Editor of Panorama, and award winning documentarian.

In Progress: "The Globalizing Impact of Documentary Filmmaking and Journalism". An education programme and conference for filmmakers and journalists which will analyse how documentary filmmaking and journalism function in communication between cultures, in conflict, and in world development. In recent years Stephen's projects have received funding from The British Council, News organizations and various private donors.

In Progress: "Arab-Israeli Filmmakers' & Journalists' Peace-Building Conference". Stephen is currently raising funding to hold an Arab-Israeli Journalists' Conference in Northern Ireland. In Planning: "The Nuclear Proposition". A documentary film that will examine the configuration of the nuclear energy industry in Europe, and the coverage of this story by the international media. Screening: "Refugee Teachers", August 2006, short narrative documentary film about the experiences of refugee-teachers at Birkbeck College, London. Stephen Desmond was a co-executive producer and online editor. The film was exhibited at a public screening held by the refugee charity 'Reconnect'.

Curated screening: "Young British Experimental Filmmakers", August 2006, Curated screening of experimental film, Sonoimagenes Festival, Buenos Aires. Stephen Desmond served as co-curator with Luciano Zubbillaga.

Screening: "Peace or Patriotism: Journalism, War and the Search for Truth", April 2004, short narrative documentary about the journalism of war reporting. Stephen Desmond was co-executive producer and editor. The film was exhibited at ISTROART 2004, and also at a screening-event in The Borough of Manhattan Community College, New York in September 2004.
