Biography

Tim is Programme Group Leader for English and Media Writing in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Society. The Programme Group includes the undergraduate English Scheme, Writing, Fashion and Culture, Screenwriting and Writing Contemporary Fiction. As a Principal Lecturer he teaches Radio Production and other creative techniques on BA (Hons) Public Relations and Communication and other courses within the Faculty.

Tim joined the University in 1991 from the commercial radio sector, where he had been a Senior Journalist for 10 years. Tim has also contributed to radio stations in the United States and New Zealand.

"I think the power of sound and radio is immense," Tim says, "I prefer radio to television because the pictures are better!"

Tim is Chair of the South of England branch of the Radio Academy| and currently the
Visiting Professor of Web Radio and Television at the University of Sassari| in Italy. 

Tim is also a Chartered Marketer| and an Accredited Practitioner in Public Relations at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations| (CIPR).

Research interests

Tim's main teaching and research interests are to do with creativity, radio production, podcasting and marketing. He has a degree in French and German and has led marketing projects in the past for a French Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 

He has an MA in European Marketing Management and is currently working on a PhD to help undergraduate students use their imagination to achieve better results in their studies.

Recent publications

Tim has co-written a book on media relations for headteachers and school governors.

His latest paper for the Higher Education Academy is ‘Sound, music and radio in the creative curriculum’. (2009, ADM-HEA Networks 07,13-15)

Awards

Tim is a winner of the British Education Teachers’ Association national prize for work on tourism marketing.
