Biography

Dr Anthony Gallagher is a Senior Lecturer and the MSc Programme Leader for International Maritime Studies and is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).

Academically, having studied for an MSc in Marine Resource Development and Protection at the Institute of Offshore Engineering, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Anthony completed his PhD entitled ‘Sustainability Systems Appraisal for Integrated Coastal Zone Management’ at Southampton. Anthony specializes in maritime and coastal affairs with research interests in the role of indicators in appraising effective management; vulnerability and sensitivity mapping in relation to environmental impacts; and adaptation to climate change for small islands. As such he has travelled extensively both for research and lecturing.  With respect to the latter he has taught maritime environmental management on the MSc Maritime Management for the University of Trinidad and Tobago and given invited lectures at the University of the Azores.

Anthony has worked on a range of international collaborative projects, as well as an independent consultant. He was Project Co-ordinator for the EU funded ‘Intensive Programme in European Integrated Coastal Zone Management’ (COZIP); involved in the EU Thematic Network on Maritime Education, Training and Mobility of Seafarers (METNET) and  participated in the ECOPORT project aimed at developing environmental assessment and management for port operating companies. In addition, as part of the maritime research team from Southampton Solent University he carried out ‘An Evaluation of the Wadden Sea Particularly Sensitive Sea Area’, as a consultancy report on behalf of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat. Independently he developed a sustainability indicator set for the Atlantic Living Coastlines project as part of the EU Demonstration Programme on Integrated Management of Coastal Zones, and worked for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) on the community-based planning and management of Apo Reef in the Philippines, a coral atoll and marine national park in the South China Sea. His current projects include a project entitled ‘Adaptation to climate change for small islands’ funded by the British Council through the Windsor Treaty in collaboration with the University of the Azores.

Anthony was brought up on a smallholding in Gloucestershire and has a wide variety of interests from sports and outdoor activities, including diving, to wine, music and P.G. Wodehouse.
