Biography

Professor of Automation and Control

Tony Hope was awarded a personal chair in Automation and Control at University of Central England in Birmingham (formerly Birmingham Polytechnic) in 1988 and was Acting Head of External Affairs until February 1990 when he joined Southampton Institute (now Southampton Solent University) as Head of Technology Research Centre.

He is co-author of a textbook Engineering Measurements, which has undergone two reprints followed by a second edition. He has published over 100 research papers, numerous technical articles and was co-editor of five proceedings for international conferences in condition monitoring and machine performance. He was a founder of the internationally known conference on Laser Metrology and Machine Performance ( LAMDAMAP ) and is also a member of the organising committees for three further international conferences in the manufacturing and condition monitoring subject areas.

His major research interests are condition monitoring of machines, applications of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, performance verification of machine tools and coordinate measuring machines. He has been the Principal Investigator for many collaborative research projects at Southampton Solent University and University of Central England, which have attracted funding from the European Commission, EPSRC, DTI and industry. He was a 1995 winner of the prestigious DTI SMART award and has recently coordinated a major research project concerned with the performance verification of coordinate measuring machines, funded by the European Commission.

He is a Chartered Engineer and is a Fellow of the British Institute of Non Destructive Testing (BINDT) where he is a member of Council, Chairman of the COMADIT (Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Technology) Group and Chairman of the Vibration Analysis Working Group. He is currently developing a national programme of accredited training courses in Condition Monitoring with BINDT.
