Associate Professor in Maritime Management
John Millican began his seafaring career in 1975 as an officer-cadet at the School of Navigation at Warsash. He went on to serve as navigating officer on general cargo ships, fruit reefers and bulk carriers before coming ashore to pursue an academic career.
After taking his degree in law, John returned to Warsash to teach and research in maritime law and shipboard management. He spent a short period as manager of the Institute of Maritime Law at Southampton University, before taking up the leadership of the Golf House Management Centre, which was then part of the College of Maritime Studies. A special relationship as management consultant to Mobil Shipping gave him valuable insights into the workings of a major international shipping company for which quality and safety are paramount.
He gained experience in a number of managerial roles leading to his present position as Dean of the Maritime and Technology Faculty. He is a Chartered Marine Technologist, a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute. He sits on the main Board of the Merchant Navy Training Board, in which capacity he is involved with national initiatives to promote the training and development of cadets and officers. He speaks regularly on these and related issues at shipping industry events and conferences.
