Trevor Thorne, Director of Marketing and Communications Service Trevor Thorne was appointed Director of the Marketing and Communications Service at Southampton Solent University in July 2006. He has responsibility for home and international student recruitment, including the University’s extensive widening participation initiatives; internal, external communications and media relations; strategic marketing, brand management and development; alumni and community relations; marketing services; and the University’s Millais Gallery.

Trevor graduated from the University of Leeds in 1985 with a first class honours degree in fine art (practice, theory and history). He became a buyer for Marks and Spencer Plc before joining Kingston Polytechnic (now University) in 1990. He oversaw the marketing aspects of Kingston’s attainment of university status in 1992, before becoming the University of Surrey’s first Director of Marketing and Public Affairs in 2000.

He has twice chaired the marketing track of the HEERA/CASE conference and is strongly committed to ensuring a positive experience for all students who enter higher education. Trevor grew up on a ‘London-overspill’ council estate in Basingstoke and was the first of his family to go to university. As a result, he believes strongly that all who have the ability to benefit from higher education should be able to do so.

Trevor’s spare-time interests include the arts and long-distance running. However, in respect of the latter, his Achille’s heel is now his ‘Achille’s heel’!
