What are your responsibilities as an employer?
As an employer we expect that you will:
Internships can be either paid or unpaid. However, it is recommended that you pay a wage that reflects both the value of the Intern's contribution and the level of training you are offering.
When considering pay it is also worth taking into account National minimum wage rates| and further guidance on National Minimum Wage and Internships|.
Note: From January 2010, graduates already receiving Jobseekers' Allowance for six months or more will be able to do an Internship for up to 13 weeks alongside claiming an allowance and looking for work. This means unpaid internships will be open to graduates irrespective of whether they or their families can support them. (Graduate Talent Pool, 2009)
Is training required?
It would be advisable to formulate an in-house training plan to suit your needs. This could take the form of a short induction process or a longer training plan where the Intern is exposed to different parts of your business or different areas of technical knowledge.
