Eco Ernie
Official website - coming soon!
Eco Ernie, Solent's innovative recycling weapon was launched in a bid to improve community relations, provide an opportunity for students and graduates to volunteer and increase their employability skills whilst supporting local charities and recycling initiatives.
A pilot project co-ordinating the collection of recyclable items during the student moving-out period at the end of June 2009 was a resounding success, securing the project a national Local Government Chronicle Award for Community Involvement for the effective partnership working of Southampton Solent University, Southampton City Council and Bag it Up.
In only the second year of the project Eco Ernie has supported a number of charities including the donation of over 3 tonnes of textiles to Bag it Up for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and much-needed items to SCRATCH for Southampton's most disadvantaged residents, whilst saving on landfill and CO2 emissions.
