Presentations and talks

B and Q Design Award

Members of the Team are often out visiting schools and colleges facilitating a range of presentations and talks on different aspects of education progression. Often, the presentations relate to university however, other aspects include supporting young people in making important decisions about what subjects to progress into (for example, during Years 6, 9 and 11), identifying and exploiting their employability skills and also preparing themselves for work experience placements. Informative and very valuable.

Taster days and visits

These provide students with an insight into university life and the benefits of HE study through a range of hands-on taster sessions within various subjects (for example, Art and Design, Digital media, Engineering, Fashion, Journalism, Law, Music, Radio production, Robotics, Sports Science, Tourism, Web design). Our Student Ambassadors| are also on hand to relay their own experiences.

Master classes

Specialist classes in chosen subject areas designed to help raise student attainment and interest in progression. Typically, these are aimed at students who are seeking to progress into HE.

UCAS Preparation workshops

A range of pick-and-mix workshops predominantly designed for those applying to UCAS (but will also benefit those seeking employment). These include support for Choosing a course, Finance and Budgeting, Personal Statements, Tutor References and UCAS.com.

Academic study support

A suite of pick-and-mix workshops that will enable students to develop valuable skills in academic writing, research, exam techniques, referencing and presentations. There is also a free, online guide to developing academic skills called succeed@solent lite: mycourse.solent.ac.uk/succeedlite|. All resources will ultimately support them in preparing for HE study.

Interview Preparation Workshops

We can provide interview preparation workshops for students who are interested in pursuing a career after school or perhaps face the prospect of an interview for a university place. As well as taking part in a short interview, students will receive feedback on their performance and top tips for future interviews.

Summer schools

Every year, Solent organises residential and non-residential Summer Schools for local students. We are currently developing these further to appeal to particular student groups, please contact us if you need more details.

Progression days

Designed to inform and prepare students for HE (Year 12 or 13). Workshops and presentations, with valuable input from Student Ambassadors, help students identify key issues to consider eg choosing a course, finance and budgeting, student life.

Women Ambassador 3

Careers fairs and parents’ evenings

Our Student Ambassadors and/or staff can attend to talk about life at university, student finance and budgeting, choosing a course or anything related to taking the step into HE.

The Compact Scheme

The Compact Scheme| aims to encourage participation in higher education for students who may not normally consider going to university, or students who through no fault of their own may not achieve their full potential at further education level.
