Live project brief

Live project brief

Students from the Magazine Journalism and Writing Fashion and Culture| courses had the chance to create new websites for businesses in the South.

The new Web Publishing unit, taught by Fiona Western and Kristian Low, saw 31 production groups work with 15 real-life clients, including the Hampshire Police Federation, a local church, chocolate shop and opticians.

Student Rebecca Legg, who worked on a website for Box Hair Salon, said: “It was a great experience to work with a live client. It taught us how to work professionally and meant we had to make sure we designed the website in accordance to the client’s taste rather than create something of our own preference.

“The unit was really good experience for the future, as it gave me a taste of what it is like to work in a professional practice – you have to work to a tight deadline and make sure the client is happy with what you produce. You have to take on board the client’s comments as well as suggesting your own ideas.

“I gained new skills by creating a working website and learnt how to write for the web. Also I learnt how to work to a brief and create something both you and the client can be proud of.”

Each group designed a new website and pitched ideas for their client, and for some the unit was so successful that the local church agreed to use the students’ ideas.

John Apter, Head of the Hampshire Police Federation, said it was a pleasure to work with the students, who were “so motivated”.

The unit gave students the chance to show off their skills and work on a live deadline driven publishing project, preparing them for the workplace and dealing with the demands of website publishing.

Fiona Western said: “This is the first time we have done this unit. It went very well and the clients were incredibly pleased with the students. Our aim is to include much more of these live projects in the future”.
