Community Relations
Students in the Community
Southampton Solent University takes its role within the community very seriously, especially in residential areas where the student population is high.
The majority of our first-year students live in halls of residence, then for the remainder of their study, move into privately-rented housing. Many houses in the Polygon area are occupied by Southampton Solent University students, however there are still many local
residents living there who are entitled to respect and to live a quiet and peaceful life.
Southampton Solent University is aware of the impact that students can have on the local community and spends considerable time and effort in raising awareness among our students about their responsibilities as part of the local community. The Students' Union run an 'Increase the Peace' campaign which encourages students to go home quietly at night and respect their neighbours. At their induction, students are given talks and videos about safety and community responsibility and students are written to, before they move out of halls of residence, about how they are expected to live and behave in the community.
Student Link (PDF document) is published by Southampton Solent University's Public Relations team and delivered to areas of high-density student housing, the Polygon and around the campus. This seeks to encourage students to be good neighbours and take on board their responsibilities of living in the community. It aims to raise awareness about noise nuisance, anti-social behaviour, safety, rubbish disposal and other issues. For further information about waste and recycling click on the link below, there may be things you didn't know such as the bulky household waste disposal for those unwanted end of term items of furniture.
What to do with your waste and recycling - further information.|
Together with the Students' Union|, the Public Relations team works closely with the Environmental Health, landlords, letting agents, Police, entertainment venues and Southampton City Council to try and resolve any continuing problems with noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour. We also meet regularly with local residents who keep us abreast of any problem situations and all local residents are welcome into the Students' Union for our annual residents day.
Should any local residents incur any problems (eg noise nuisance, anti-social behaviour) from groups believed to be Southampton Solent University's students, they are advised to follow the residents protocol for complaints |(PDF document), which shows what action the Police, Environmental Health and Southampton Solent University are able to take.
