BA (Hons) Fashion Photography (Top-up)

Enhance your fashion career with this one-year top-up to a full degree

Enquire: 023 8201 5066

Do you have a love of photography, art and fashion? Are you hoping to upgrade your existing qualifications (at HND level or equivalent) into a full honours degree? This one-year fashion photography course explores the disciplines of fashion, photography, fashion film and multi-media production, providing you with both technical photography tuition and a thorough understanding of relevant academic contexts.

  • Solent is one of the few universities in the UK that combine the disciplines of fashion and photography into a full degree.
  • Students learn from a team of professional stylists and photographers with extensive experience in catwalk, advertising and editorial photography.
  • Southampton Solent University encourages a collaborative culture. Students work with fashion designers, hair stylists, make-up artists and media production specialists on exciting joint projects. This mirrors working practises in the industry and boosts student employability.
  • Students are supported by the course team’s network of industry contacts as they seek work experience and freelancing opportunities.
  • Southampton Solent has produced highly commended photography students, including a Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus Programme 2015 finalist.
  • The University’s multi-million-pound media academy gives students access to 11 professional photography studios, a fully equipped infinity cove and a range of make-up and hair design spaces.
  • Solent Creatives, our in-house creative agency, gives students the opportunity to pitch for real industry clients and collaborate with other students on multidisciplinary projects.
  • The University’s student-managed high-street fashion store, Re:So, provides many opportunities for photography students to get involved in retail activities.

The industry

The UK fashion industry contributed £26bn to the UK economy last year, up from £21bn in 2009 (Oxford Economics, published by the British Fashion Council). This huge industry supports almost 800,000 jobs and is the largest employer of all the UK's creative industries.

There are also opportunities for talented photographers outside of fashion. From retail and photojournalism to sport and live performance, businesses in a wide variety of industries depend on professional photography to properly market their products. These positions can range from freelance contract work to full-time, in-house employment.

The programme

This one-year top-up programme is ideally suited to students who want to upgrade their existing qualifications (at HND level or equivalent) into a full honours degree. Students spend the year developing their practical and creative photography skills; studying fashion and photography academic theory; and improving their professional portfolio.

Students will learn a diverse range of skills, benefitting from access to professional photography, make-up and hair design studios. Southampton Solent University’s fashion photography programme also offers learners the opportunity to hone their IT, publication layout and design skills in our Mac suites. Available software packages include InDesign, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop.

The University’s strong ties with industry have offered students many opportunities to undertake work experience - working on live projects and client briefs for fashion industry partners. Recent students have enjoyed work placements at companies including Top Man, Fat Face, All Walks Beyond the Catwalk and Good Fibres.

The course places a strong emphasis on equipping students with the skills and knowledge required by employers. Previous graduates have gone on to work at renowned fashion companies including Karen Millen, Marks and Spencer, Coast and the London School of Modelling in roles such as creative media photographer, fashion stylist, visual stylist, production coordinator, model scout and booker.

Next steps

Think a career as a fashion photographer might be for you? With an experienced teaching team, industry-standard facilities and a unique focus on portfolio development, this one year top-up programme is ideally suited to students who wish to upgrade their existing qualifications and improve their employment prospects.
