Do you love high-end fashion? Would you like to help shape the future of fashion media? This fashion styling and make-up for media top-up programme is your chance to build upon the skills and qualifications you’ve already acquired, turning them into a full honours degree. You’ll undertake intensive study of fashion, beauty and trend forecasting before using your final major project to specialise in an area of your choice.

The industry

The fashion industry is a fast paced and rapidly expanding market with huge potential for graduate employment. In the UK the industry contributes around £26bn to the economy each year - an increase of 22% since 2009 (British Fashion Council, 2014). The fashion industry is estimated to support almost 800,000 jobs, making it the largest employer of all the UK's creative industries.

The programme

Southampton Solent University’s fashion styling and make-up top-up programme recognises the importance of teaching workplace focused skills that are relevant to industry employers. Students develop their craft alongside an experienced team of industry professionals, learning about the academic and cultural context of fashion styling while creating a portfolio of professional work.

Available facilities include hair and makeup studios, airbrushing kits, photographic studios (including an infinity cove), Apple Mac computers with the latest creative software packages and a comprehensive media loans facility.

Learning in the School of Art, Design and Fashion is supplemented by a programme of guest lectures. Various high-profile guest speakers have presented to students over the last few years, providing them with valuable industry insight. Recent lectures have seen representatives from Illamasqua and famous make-up artist Alex Box share visit the campus to share their knowledge.

This course is suitable for anyone with a relevant academic background at HND level or equivalent. By studying intensively, students are able to earn a full honours degree in just one year.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Lectures, seminars, technical workshops, individual study, seminars, tutorials and live projects. Students receive support and formative feedback in weekly tutorial sessions and one-to-one drop-in sessions.

Work experience
Solent’s strong ties to the industry provide various work experience opportunities. You’ll also receive support in writing your CV, advice on how to pitch yourself to employers and guidance for presenting a professional portfolio.

Previous students have gained work experience at Notion magazine, Fashion TV, London Garment Expo, ITV, Company magazine, Dazed & Confused magazine, Jonathan Saunders, Atelier Mayer and Aqua PR; as well as with leading stylists such as Katie England and Alexis Knox.

You’ll have access to a specialist make-up and hair studio with industry-standard features such as airbrush guns and studio lights; modern photography studios and the latest photographic and lighting equipment; and well-equipped IT labs with a range of editing software.

Links with industry

You will work on industry-focused projects be supported to developing the professional portfolio and website you’ll need to find work as a freelance practitioner or consultant.

Industry experts such as stylist Alexis Knox, photographer Madame Peripetie and make-up artist Alex Box visit regularly and give input to the course.

Your individual major project takes industry standards into account. It can be linked with industry and involves working on a client-based brief. 

Transferable skills

Creative thinking, project management, verbal, visual, digital and written communication skills and problem-solving.

Examples of employment obtained by recent graduates

Graduates have gone on to a wide range of roles in fashion and other industries, including online stylist at Hungry Tiger, make-up designer at Wonderland magazine, visual merchandising and creative at Illamasqua and working on the BBC’s The One Show.

  • UK applicants are required to send an electronic portfolio and may be asked to attend an interview
  • Applicants from outside the UK will be required to send an electronic portfolio and may be interviewed by video call.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Note to all international students requiring a visa:

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Southampton Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Southampton Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

Costs involved


Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year are:

UK and EU full-time fees: £9,000

International full-time fees: £11,000

Other costs

Optional final year project materials: £500

Graduation costs 

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

How to apply


Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.
