Got a passion for visual communication? Looking to spend a year specialising in your chosen field? On Southampton Solent University’s promotional media top-up programme you’ll study a range of promotional techniques, marketing theories and cultural contexts, boosting your employability and upgrading your existing qualifications into a full degree in just one year.

  • Students tailor the course to suit their ambitions, developing skills that will help them throughout their careers.
  • Students also study transferable academic skills including presentation, research and report writing. These will be applied to a final major project.
  • Southampton Solent University is home to a range of high-end facilities including green screen rooms, broadcast quality studios, post-production suites, design studios and printmaking facilities.
  • The media academy provides a comprehensive media loans scheme, giving students free access to high-definition video cameras and DSLR full-frame cameras.

The industry

The evolution of the internet has increased the number of promotional channels available to businesses. This has created a range of opportunities for graduates with a passion for creating and managing promotional content. Students may find themselves working as an in-house practitioner, in a creative agency, or as a freelance creative. 

The programme

Southampton Solent University’s promotional media top-up programme gives students the chance to top up their existing qualifications to a full honours degree, building the essential skills required to secure a career in media, design, marketing, advertising, PR or publishing.

Students specialise their knowledge by picking from a range of optional units. Available units include global media strategies, photography production, media buying, PR, not-for-profit advertising and freelancing skills.

The course is supported by a range of creative organisations including British Design and Art Direction (D&AD) and the Young Creative Network. Past students have also had access to industry professionals and guest speakers from the Work-Club, Saatchi & Saatchi, AKQA, Thinking Juice, Karmarama, the National Advertising Benevolence Society (NABS) and the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB).

Students learn from an academic team with a wide range of industry experience. Their insight ensures that students are up to speed with the latest industry developments and have support while looking for work placement opportunities.

Learning is supported by a range of industry standard facilities including fully equipped IT centres, video and audio editing software and creative packages from Quark and Adobe.

Students are invited to pitch for freelance work at Solent Creatives, an on-campus creative agency that specialises in connecting students with businesses that need creative help. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain work experience, build a portfolio and make industry contacts.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The course is taught through traditional lectures and seminars, creative and technical workshops, live industry briefs, student-led event planning and management. 

Work experience
You’ll have the opportunity to work with industry partners on a variety of live briefs, and learn from professionals who give guest lectures and portfolio surgeries. We work closely with the advertising and design organisation D&AD, Young Creative Network (YCN) and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM). Solent Creatives, Solent’s marketing and design agency, also gives you unique opportunities to pitch for work with many commercial clients.

The course is assessed through coursework, including reports, essays, creative portfolio building, live projects, presentations and a final major project.

Our facilities

You will have access to our fully equipped IT centre, with both PC and Mac computers featuring video and audio editing programmes and industry-standard software packages such as QuarkXpress and the latest Adobe Creative Suite.

Solent also boasts professional large-format printing facilities and a comprehensive collection of modern film-making and photography equipment, ranging from high-definition (HD) video cameras to DSLR full-frame cameras with a selection of top-quality lenses.

You’ll also have the opportunity to work with real-world clients on live briefs from brands such as Ted Baker, American Airlines, Skoda, Nike, Homebase, Oxfam and the Reading festival.

Transferable skills

During the course you’ll develop your creative thinking and analytical abilities, writing skills, presentation presence and pitching, and skills in digital communication, teamwork and project management.

Examples of employment obtained by recent graduates

Promotional media graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of professions across TV, radio, advertising, online environments, event management and marketing.

Entry requirements

  • Relevant HND/foundation degree pass with Merit Overall (55 per cent) or 240 CATS points from a relevant three-year degree
We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Note to all international students requiring a visa:

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Southampton Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Southampton Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

Costs involved


Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year are:

UK and EU full-time fees: £9,000 per year

International full-time fees: £11,000 per year

Graduation costs 

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

How to apply


Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.
