The industry

The London 2012 Olympic legacy has given the sports industry a major boost and sport currently ranks among the top 15 mainstream activities in the UK economy, supporting nearly half a million jobs (Telegraph, May 2015). With funding from the National Lottery, Rio Olympics and money committed by the Government, the sports industry is only set to grow.

Studying this course at Southampton Solent will give you valuable industry insight and help you to build your business skills to tap into this exciting and growing industry.

The programme

This innovative degree focuses on the business of the sports industry. Students will study subjects such as marketing, law and finance alongside sport development, coaching and research, giving them the industry knowledge and skill to pursue a career in the business of running a sports club or similar organisation.

The experienced course team’s established local and national industry links has provided previous students the opportunity for valuable work experience in the industry. Past students have also benefitted from talks delivered by guest lecturers, giving insight around current issues in the industry to help build students’ knowledge.

To complement their degree studies and help to boost employability, students have also previously been encouraged to gain valuable work experience by studying for an NGB coaching qualification.

To develop practical skills, students studying on this course will have access to the University’s full range of modern sports facilities, including a bespoke sports psychology lab, the multi-million pound Test Park Sports Ground and an RYA-recognised watersports centre. 

Previous students have given this course a rating of 95% for overall satisfaction in the 2014 National Student Survey, reflecting the quality of the course and the numerous opportunities available to students throughout their study.

Students who love participating in sport can join one of the University’s many sports clubs for track, field or water. Elite athletes can benefit from the University’s High Performance Academy where they will receive mentoring, one-to-one strength and conditioning training and high performance sport support lectures.

Teaching, learning and assessment

You’ll attend lectures and seminars involving a combination of group work and individual study.

Work experience
Students are encouraged to gain extensive work experience through volunteering or work placements, drawing on Solent’s excellent relationships with local sports clubs, organisations, fitness clubs, sports centres and summer camps.

We use a variety of assessment methods including written assignments, practical simulations, in-course tests, case studies, reflective portfolios, group work, reports, presentations and exams.

Study abroad

You'll have the opportunity to spend between three months and a year of your course studying abroad at one of our EU partner universities, as part of the Erasmus programme.

240 points (for 2016 entry) or 96 points (for 2017 entry) from:

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* or equivalent.
  • Grade C or above in GCSE English and Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • All successful applicants will be required to undertake a criminal record check processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  • Alternative entry to the course is available through the Sport, Event and Tourism Foundation Year or International Foundation Year.
We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Note to all international students requiring a visa:

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Southampton Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Southampton Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

Costs involved


Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year are:

UK and EU full-time fees: £9,000 per year

International full-time fees: £11,000 per year

Other costs

Compulsory kit in various combinations: £105.

Optional professional body endorsement (NGBs) NGBs range from £10 to £250 depending on course.

Graduation costs 

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

How to apply


Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.
