Marilyn had been involved in social work practice for around 40 years, but her appointment at Southampton Solent University was her first formal teaching post.
“I was impressed that I would be supported to complete the PgC in Learning and Teaching,” she explains. “I wanted to take every opportunity to develop my teaching skills and awareness of higher education issues, as well as for my own career and professional development.”
Marilyn found the course enjoyable and beneficial. “The theory around assessment has been useful, and it was good to be able to meet with other lecturers to compare ideas,” she says. “I was interested to discover all about adult learning and ways of facilitating learning, as well as reflecting on my practice and individual approach.”
“I think the confidence it gave me was very important. I had the chance to explore theoretical concepts and apply them to my practice,” explains Marilyn. “I have been able to apply a lot of what I learned to my teaching and preparation,” she adds.
“There were lots of things that I benefited from, some quite small, but others bigger. All in all, I really appreciate the opportunity I was given with this course."
