Sarah Cooper

2012

Sarah had worked as a journalist and sub-editor for a variety of magazines and newspapers before joining Southampton Solent University as a lecturer in 2007. Part of her new contract was to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

“Having never taught before, this course offered the opportunity to discuss teaching and learning with colleagues,” explains Sarah. “The reflective teaching and learning aspects were particularly useful and my teaching was informed as a result. I still incorporate these practices in my classes.”

Although this course was compulsory for Sarah, she also found it highly enjoyable. “I liked meeting with my colleagues and the support that we were able to give each other,” she says. “It also gave me the opportunity to analyse and reflect on my work.”

Sarah is now Course Leader for BA (Hons) Writing Fashion and Culture. “Having the opportunity to take this Postgraduate Certificate has definitely been a bonus,” she admits. “It has been beneficial to my work, and ultimately to my students."
