Course overview  

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to enter a career in marketing management. Several of our students from recent years are already working in strategic roles. The course has had excellent reviews from External Examiners. Professor Alan Pulford says "This course provides excellent learning for students and is comparable with those from any leading UK university." The MA in Marketing is a universally-recognised qualification. The syllabus provides in-depth and practical study of a wide range of marketing topics and gives students a strategic, international and ethical perspective.

Professional accreditation  

MA graduates automatically qualify for membership of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). For existing Members of the CIM, the MA and Postgraduate Diploma may contribute CPD points towards Chartered Marketer Status.

Course content  

The full-time course is structured to enable students to concentrate on their Marketing Dissertation during the summer period. The taught part of the course takes place in periods 1 and 2. Students study four units each in periods 1 and 2 from a list of core and option units.

Assessment

There is a varied and interesting assessment programme involving in-course individual and group work. There are no examinations. You must pass all eight taught units plus the Research Methods and Dissertation unit in order to gain a master's degree.

Entry level

The normal minimum entry requirement is a UK-equivalent lower second undergraduate degree in any discipline. However, applicants may also be admitted by virtue of prior learning and/or experience.  

Additional qualifications may give one or more unit exemptions, although in many cases, applicants may nevertheless be advised to commence the course from the start. This may be particularly the case where relevant work experience is lacking. Generally, holders of the following qualifications may apply:

  • CIM Advanced Certificate in Marketing (pre-2004)/CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing 
  • Business degree without marketing specialisation
  • Marketing-based degree
  • MBA

English Language Requirements

Applicants for whom English is not their first language must normally demonstrate that they possess one of the following qualifications at the stated grade:

  • Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) A or B
  • IELTS 6.5 or more
  • TOEFL 600 or more, or 250 for the computer version.

We additionally reserve the right to determine admission to the course by interview or other appropriate means, and may ask students to attend English language lessons in addition to their MA subjects.

Special features

*This course has two intakes per year, September and January. Students starting in September will take 12 months to complete; those starting in January will take 16 months, with a four-month break between May and October.
