Southampton local David Thomas was given the opportunity to study for the Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel and Development by his employer. “I spoke to a colleague who had already attended the course at Solent (then The Southampton Institute) and it came highly recommended.” Explains David. He adds, “I am also a local lad so was keen to use a facility that I had known for years!”
Despite being away from education for many years, he thoroughly enjoyed his studies at Southampton Solent University. “I had to get to grips with the basic study skills, but the work itself was stimulating, stretching and challenging. I loved doing the course!” He declares.
But it wasn’t just the course work he enjoyed, as David elaborates. “It was great meeting fellow students and building relationships and supporting each other. The University staff were also knowledgeable, professional and helpful.”
David is an HR Manager for a major retailer. “I enjoy all aspects of the HR Spectrum, even the unpleasant bits!” he admits. “It’s great to be able to make a difference to people, and particularly satisfying to see those around you developing and going on to bigger and better things.”
He credits the University with helping him to develop his career within human resource management. He explains, “I am totally convinced that my time at Solent has made me a more effective manager. I am able to deal with challenges with much more confidence and I can deal with issues using a much broader perspective.”
David has one final piece of advice for any potential students: “Like most thing in life, you only get out what you put in. Once you decide to undertake the course, commit yourself and give it all you can. It will be worth it.”
