The course provides the perfect opportunity to become industry-aware, able to critically analyse the sporting media, understand the way it operates and to actively participate in it. Sports Broadcasting is thriving at the moment and there is a serious shortage of graduates with the skill base required by the sports media industry.
Attracting graduates from arts-based courses, this MA will enable you to acquire both the practical and analytical skills to successfully operate in the competitive world of sports media.
Our industry-standard broadcast equipment will enable you to use television, radio and online facilities to replicate professional practice, and you will learn how to produce, report and present to broadcast standard.
Taught by lecturers with extensive contemporary experience in the sports broadcast field, as well as leading academics in this arena, the MA Sports Broadcasting provides a gateway to this exciting career.

These will be facilitated by our strong links with industry, and we will actively support you to establish contacts. Course content
The broadcasting of sport: national and international perspectives
This theoretical unit will analyse the historical, political and cultural factors which have shaped and defined the development and growth of the broadcasting of sport, both in the UK, and within international and global contexts.
Sports broadcasting
Acquire the skills to succeed in an industry where high production values are aligned with technical and editorial excellence to produce high quality content. Your core journalistic skills will be enhanced, and you will develop an extensive working knowledge of the programme making process in video and audio. You will have the opportunity to work with camera crews to plan, produce and edit shoots in a variety of styles.
Cultural influences on media and writing
Focus on key themes and issues that affect society, and therefore impact on the creative industries, journalism and writing, from the cult, to celebrity, to the impact of globalisation. You’ll identify the cultural, ethical, social, political and technological implications of the area of communication practice that interests you and explore the theoretical and practical connections between the ideas and debates raised throughout the unit.
Professional practice
This unit will critically analyse the global media, publishing and creative industries in the UK, equipping you with the advanced skills required to research the industry that you seek to work in upon graduation. You will be supported to secure a work placement, or freelance assignments, for one month in order to strengthen your industry awareness, and to refine your skills.
Major project
The Masters Project provides an opportunity to design, execute and present a demanding piece of work that deploys a systematic and in-depth understanding of the skills and debates relevant to your particular discipline of study.
Assessment
This MA is taught and assessed using a vast variety of methods that mirror industry practice. In addition to lectures and seminars, you will take part in workshops and production sessions using the Faculty’s industry standard media production facilities.
We also have our own e-learning facilities, social networking sites and blogs to enrich your learning experience, and the majority of course material will be available electronically via our online learning platform, myCourse.

This MA is taught by a talented team of sports journalism professionals, including editors, freelancers and award winning journalists, who maintain their professional practice and industry links by continuing to work in the industry. Excellent working relationships with national and local sporting clubs provide invaluable opportunities for you to gain an insight into what provides the buzz of being a sports journalist.

Our undergraduate students have recently enjoyed lectures from Phil McNulty (Chief Football Writer for BBC Sport), Ben Gallop (Head of BBC Sport Interactive and BBC Sport’s Formula One coverage), freelance sports journalists such as Graham Nickless and David Llewellyn, and sports stars such as Iwan Thomas, Sean Udal and Matthew Le Tissier.

You will become part of a creative Faculty, working alongside students studying photography, film, graphic design, visual arts and fashion. The shared units within the School of Communications aim to foster discussion and debate across different disciplines and will enable you to develop a much broader appreciation of media and culture, which will be invaluable to your success in an industry which reflects the fast-changing nature of our society.

You will work in an environment beyond that of the conventional lecture theatre, including two television studios with control room, digital video editing suites, four radio studios and digital audio editing suites. We have two dedicated newsrooms equipped with internet-linked PCs and Apple MACs. Print-oriented technology includes numerous PCs and Apple Macs equipped with Quark, Photoshop and other industry standard software.
Fees
Fees for the 2012/13 academic year are:
Full-time
UK and EU students: £6,500 per annum
Overseas students: £10,000 per annum
Part-time
UK and EU students: £3,250 pa
Overseas students: £5,000 pa
