Course overview
The Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) is the professional body representing more than 22,000 Legal Executives and trainee Legal Executives. ILEX was formed in 1963 with the support of the Law Society. With local branches through out England and Wales, ILEX promotes the status and role of Legal Executive within the legal profession to career advisers, school leavers, graduates, mature students and those considering a change of career.
ILEX has developed an education and training scheme, which offers the opportunity of a career in law for anyone. The route for qualifying as a Legal Executive is the Membership Examination. All applicants wishing to qualify will complete a Certificate in Law and Practice, followed by a Diploma in Law and Practice. Each qualification takes one year and will consist of five subjects. At Level 6 the units form the units required for the ILEX Graduate fast-track.
The value of the ILEX qualification is increasingly recognised. Recently retired Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf (honorary Vice-President of ILEX) has stated that: "ILEX members have a significant job and an important role to play in respect of the civil justice system". This indicates that Legal Executives are coming to be regarded as the third arm of the legal profession with Solicitors and Barristers.
