“
I started working for law firm as an assistant 11 years ago. Since then I have worked my way up and now take care of my own case load. Although I am very confident in my ability to do my job, I’ve never had the paperwork to back it up. I decided I needed to do something to change this.
“I chose the ILEX route because I wanted to become legally qualified without having to go back to full time education, or by doing a law degree and the Legal Practice Course. Studying ILEX and working at the same time just made sense. I also wanted to learn at a university rather than at home simply because I don’t have the discipline to make myself study after a full day at work.
“I love knowing something today that I didn’t know yesterday. For example I’ve found criminal litigation absolutely fascinating. I think you feel safer as an individual knowing the law, knowing what the police can and can’t do, understanding powers of arrest, and knowing your options when you go to court.
“It’s also nice being taught by specialists in their fields and by lawyers who currently work as lawyers –it’s good to get input from people actually doing the job. I find the law subjects a bit harder going, but the lecturers manage to make less interesting subjects quite fun!
“I’m not yet sure what I am going to do when I finish the course. I might complete the extra subjects and do the route all the way to solicitor, but I’m not sure if I really need to. Becoming ILEX qualified will enable me earn more money, and that’s the ultimate agenda – to become more valuable, credible and employable!”
