Course overview
The Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) is the professional body representing more than 22,000 Legal Executives and trainee Legal Executives. ILEX was formed in 1963 with the support of the Law Society. With local branches through out England and Wales, ILEX promotes the status and role of Legal Executive within the legal profession to career advisers, school leavers, graduates, mature students and those considering a change of career.
ILEX has developed an education and training scheme, which offers the opportunity of a career in law for anyone. The route to qualifying as a Legal Executive is the Membership Examination, which is divided into Level 3 and Level 6. Level 3 (Professional Diploma in Law and Practice) provides a broad introduction to law and legal practice. Level 6 (formerly Level 4) (Professional Higher Diploma in Law) allows for the specialist study of three substantive law papers and one practice subject. Level 6 papers are set at degree level whilst the Level 6 practice papers are set at a standard designed to identify those who have the ability to become expert practitioners in their specialist fields.
The value of the ILEX qualification is increasingly recognised. The recently retired Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf (who is an Honorary Vice- President of ILEX) has stated,
“ILEX members have a significant job and an important role to play in respect of the civil justice system”.
This indicates that Legal Executives are coming to be regarded as the third arm of the legal profession with Solicitors and Barristers.
Professional accreditation
Southampton Solent University is an Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) accredited centre.
