Who is this for?
Those with an intermediate knowledge of the English language and an initial awareness of professional practice in their discipline.
Overview
Participants develop and extend their practical language skills in vocational contexts at lower advanced level. They learn English which conforms to UK academic expectations through practised use - listening, writing, speaking and reading - with selected aspects of grammar. A pass is equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5.

Delivery
Face-to-face teaching sessions, guided learning and independent study.
Interactive tutor-led language classes introduce spoken and written teaching materials, explain key vocabulary and structures, and organise practice through pair and group exercises.
Workshops focus on language-related activities to give confidence and proficiency in academic writing and note-taking.
Language textbooks are supplemented with online exercises, audio and video cassettes and the University’s multimedia system.
Assessment
Assessment is through coursework, including a 40-minute reading test, a speaking test through a conversation with the tutor or a class presentation, and a portfolio assessing listening and writing skills. There are ongoing formative assessments.
