Who is this for?
Those interested in art history wishing to develop a greater understanding of collections.
Overview
This explores the nature and psychology of collecting and the cultural, historical and social contexts of public and private collections from the Renaissance to the present day. Theory is illuminated by specific collectors and collections associated with Southampton City Art Gallery.
Participants gain an understanding of the international art market and the transition from the ‘cabinet of curiosities’ to artworks separated from natural rarities. The diversity of modern art collecting, including installation and land art, is also investigated.
