Who is this for?

Art practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the important area of art in social and community contexts.

Overview

Participants produce artworks in public or social contexts - including a real world, innovative, practical production that gives opportunities to explore sites, contexts, audiences and constituencies.

It culminates in the production of a visual artifact - installation, performance or series - set in and designed for a specific site.

Participants develop an understanding of the practical and theoretical concerns of contemporary public and community art works. They also develop a historical perspective and an understanding of the roles and strategies of the public/community artist.

Areas of study include the history of community and public art; site-specificity in relation to art production; understanding contexts and audiences; proposal development; roles and strategies for the artist working in social contexts, environmental art, issues of memorialisation.

Delivery

Most teaching and learning is in the context of a real-world project, with references to local arts organisations and arts projects in the community, such as A-Space, Red Hot Press and Arts Asia.

Lectures provide understanding of historical context and guidance on significant issues in Community and Public Art practices.

Seminars, led by arts organisation specialists, engage students in debate and decision-making.

Assessment

Assessment is through art pieces and reflective journal. Participants’ ideas, visual experiments and work-in-progress receive peer and tutor constructive critique.
