Who is this for?

Those with an enthusiasm and interest in art wishing to develop literary attempts to describe and criticise it.

Overview

Considers critical literature of fine arts, focussing on the emergence of art criticism and the evolution of the role of the art critic in society. It explores the importance of critical writing to shape public taste, disseminating developments in contemporary practice and promoting the rise and precipitating the fall of artistic movements.

The way contemporary art writing draws on literary tropes, conventions of fiction writing and autobiography is considered, as well as the blurring of artworks and art writing. Southampton City Art Gallery’s collection and exhibitions provide core material for the development of critical skills.
