Who is this for?
Anyone from an art history background wishing to expand their knowledge in the field of European art.
Overview
Focuses on British and European cities with important and distinctive histories of art design and production, drawing on examples in Southampton City Art Gallery.
Social, economic, religious, historical and political factors that have influenced art design and production are considered, as well as ways geographical location, urban topography, the built environment, and the availability of materials influence a city’s artistic character.
Themes of decline, revival and reputation are considered, as well as the nature of public and private patronage of art, through case studies.

Delivery
Lectures and seminars provide introductions to resources, overviews and case studies in the history of urban artistic production. They support directed and independent learning and teamwork for certain seminar topics. Participants are encouraged to use primary evidence in the form of contemporary accounts of working practices and conditions and individual careers.
Assessment
Assessment is through a seminar project, aimed at building up an overview of artistic production in a designated city over a period of time and a presentation, comparing and contrasting the artistic production/consumption characteristics of two chosen cities over the same period.
